My Kingdom Hearts 3 journey is going well, and I am so amazed at this game. While the canon path is Toy Box => Corona, I decided to tackle Corona first to get its world Keyblade(I was watching a speedrun of the game) and I was so awed.
I have never watched Tangled, and yet this game retells the story with its own OP inserted in. Marluxia's return was not surprising but I was impressed that he managed to escape Castle Oblivion. To be honest, I got spoiled to the whole story of the game by a video and it leaves a bitter taste in my mouth, but it was nice to get to see Sora, Donald and Goofy interact with Flynn Rider and Rapunzel.
The folktale of Rapunzel is one of the stories that intrigued me the most. Disney has the Midas Touch to all tales it grabs under its wings, and this was no different. The versions of Rapunzel's tale I've seen are... not as family-friendly as Disney's bawlderization of this, but they all involved a girl with hair so long it was the only way to get into the tower and an evil stepmother who locked her up to keep her from getting hit on by men for her beauty.
To be honest, the scene where Rapunzel gets a haircut(no spoilers) might have well been ripped from the movie but watching Sora and his two goofballs charge to the tower, fighting off Nobodies and Heartless like no business was awesome. The bosses here were fun too but I won't spoil them.
Getting the only missable item in the game, the Forest Clasp, even though it's outdated by the endgame, is still really nice. I like how Sora and Rapunzel interact and it was worth 13 years of real time to make sure we get stuff like this. Stuff like this makes me not feel so bad that the only returning worlds were Olympus(which has been in KH since Day 1) and the Pirates of the Caribbean property, which really pops this time thanks to the Unreal Engine, the KH2 Port Royal world really didn't look very clean in the graphical engine.
What's even cooler is that the worlds are not ghost towns, you actually walk by people living in the world. Yes, there are monsters in each world but the game cordons them to areas where people are not wandering around. You only see other humans in the castle town of Corona and it was fun having Sora dance at the festival.
Now on to the stuff I enjoyed outside of this world:
- The Lucky Emblem hunt is awesome. It's like a scavenger hunt but it doesn't need to be done if you don't want to do it. But I am a grubby hoarder so I hunt for every chest and lucky emblem. I am pissed off that I missed a chest in Corona. XD
- Classic Kingdom was introduced in the mobile Union X game but thankfully you do not have to score high to get the trophies involving these LCD game knock-offs.
- The Bistro mini-games are not too punishing though I think the egg-cracking game is the hardest to do correctly, I kept messing up the first few times as you must tilt the sticks VERY gently to avoid smashing the egg. Still, collecting ingredients around the worlds and using them to make food buffs really makes things nifty. I had my doubts about Remy (which I wish they had named him but I understand that nobody knows Remy's name but the rat himself) but it was funny to see him grab Sora's hair and body-snatch him. ;)
- Now that Sora has Superjump it's nice to see him Flowmotioning like he did in Dream Drop Distance although he can't do the jumps too much. Nice way to skip boring routes.
- Wall parkour is pretty awesome!
